4 essential tips for building a successful blog

2010 January 18

Building a successful blog all boils down to 4 main things. If followed, your blog will surely become successful. Building and maintaining a successful blog is not the hardest thing you will ever do, but it’s also not the easiest. If you want to use your blog to just ramble on about everyday events in your life, you most likely aren’t going to take it very far. There are 4 things you really should focus on for running your blog.

#1. The look of your blog.

Style or the look of your blog is important to set the stage for what you will be blogging about. This is where a good blog platform such as WordPress comes in handy. WordPress has many blog templates available at the click of your mouse. Did I mention that there are thousands of them for free? No matter what the topic of your blog is, there will be a template to compliment it.

You will want to find a template with a good layout as well as a nice color scheme for your blog. Don’t get too hung up on the look right away. WordPress makes it so easy to completely change the look without disturbing the content so you can change it at any time.

If this seems like too daunting a task, you can always find people willing to set up your blog for a reasonable fee. The one thing I will say is, WordPress is getting easier and easier to use. If you just try it yourself, you will soon realize it’s easier than you think.

#2. Your blog’s content.

As I said earlier, if this is just going to be a personal diary, you will have trouble getting any kind of a following. Unless of course, you are an extremely exciting individual.

The best way to add content is to stick with 1 niche or topic and keep your blog focussed on that niche or topic. If you are blogging about everything under the sun, you will have a hard time keeping peoples interest.

When it comes to content, the more the merrier. The more information your blog has, the more people you will attract to read it. You also need to remember that the search engines love lots and lots of fresh new content. If you really want your blog to take off, you will no doubt need the help of the search engines. Otherwise, how will people ever find you?

#3. Advertising on your blog.

If you want your blog to bring in steady money, placing ads is one of the best ways to get it going. There will be a happy medium you must find for the ads vs content. If you blog is nothing but ads and not much content, readers will just plain and simply leave. Why else would they stick around? We all get enough advertising throughout the day.

You will also want to limit the use of banners. People just aren’t as responsive to banners as they used to be. Most people will find too many banners to be annoying. The ads you put up should also be relative to the topics of your blog. A program like Google Adsense, will do this automatically for you, so you won’t have to worry about finding the right ads.

#4. Blog consistently.

I have saved the most important topic for last. In order to have a successful blog, consistency is the name of the game. Nobody ever starts out from day one with tens of thousands of visitors. It just takes time to build a successful blog from the ground up. Even if you follow the other tips we just discussed, you wont get very far without constantly updating your blog with new material. Blogging for money takes a great amount of dedication. If you aren’t committed to your blog, you will not make any decent money with it.
